The Salt Well of Markam, Tibet

In Markam County, Tibet, there is a place located in the Lancang River Valley, where there is an ancient salt well with a history of over 1300 years.

Even today, ancient methods are still used to produce salt. This type of salt is well salt, which is extracted from underground brine, and after being sun-dried to evaporate the water content, edible salt remains.

This place also has the only Catholic church in Tibet. Once, there were quite a few churches in the Tibetan region, but most were destroyed due to religious conflicts. This is the only remaining Catholic church in the whole of Tibet, and hence, there is a relatively rare community of Tibetan Catholics living here.
