Tashkurgan (تاشقۇرغان تاجىك ئاپتونوم ناھىيىسى‎) is now the most remote place in China, but historically, it was a necessary route from China to Afghanistan and India. Xuanzang passed through here on his return to China. The Tajik people here are ethnically and linguistically closer to the ancient Khotan.
