Nanquan Residential Area, Sandaoling

Nanquan Residential Area is located to the south of the present-day Sandoling Town, east of the open-pit mine. It used to be the residential area for units related to the open-pit mine. It is also the most frequently featured part of the ruins of Sandoling.

Its golden era was in the 1970s and 1980s, but as the resources of the open-pit mine gradually depleted, people began to move away. When I visited, there were still a few elderly residents living there, but it was evident from the windows of the houses that most people had left.

The information online that tens of thousands of people once lived here is incorrect. At its peak, Nanquan's population was in the scale of several thousand. It was also one of the filming locations for "No Man's Land"; at the beginning of the movie, the little restaurant is situated in Nanquan.
