On the way to Lenghu by car, we stopped to rest at a rest area. Few people know that this is where Mantra originally started.
Now, on the map, only a place name "Old Mantra" is marked here, and the ruins by the roadside are hard to notice unless you look carefully.
Around 1956, thousands of tents were set up here, marking the prelude to the development of the Qaidam Basin. At its peak, 30,000 people lived here. In 1964, the units here moved to the west, which is now the location of the asbestos mine.
Due to the tents' difficulty in leaving traces, what remains now are only faint remnants of some buildings, making it hard to imagine the scene of a tent city with tens of thousands of people back then.
