The Renovating High Platform Residences in Kashgar

The High Platform Residences are located at the northeastern end of Kashgar's old city, built on a 40-meter-high and 800-meter-long loess cliff. In the mid-9th century, the Karakhanid Dynasty established a royal palace on the north side of the cliff. The current residential complex on the high platform took shape in the 16th century. The cliff was originally connected from north to south but was later separated by floods, forming two parts. The northern cliff was the site of the Karakhanid royal palace, while the southern cliff developed into the present-day High Platform Residences.

When we arrived, it was under renovation and not open to the public. We walked to a construction site where a guard came out to get water, and we took the opportunity to slip in and have a look.
