Karamay Oil Production Plant No. 5 is also known as the Baikouquan Oil Production Plant. Initially, like other oil fields, people lived in tents. Residential buildings started being constructed in 1980, and new housing construction ceased in 1998 as people gradually moved to live in Karamay City. This shift wasn't because the oil was depleted, but because improved transportation meant it only took a little over an hour to get from the city to the plant, making it unnecessary to maintain a residential area there.
