Aksay Kazakh Autonomous County was established in the 1950s at Boro Janzhi. The Kazakhs who originally came from Barkol and Qinghe in Xinjiang during the early Republic era due to the political situation were nomadic in Qinghai at that time.

In the 1990s, the county began to relocate due to reasons such as high altitude and radioactive elements in the water sources. By the late 1990s, the relocation to the current location of Aksay County at the foot of the mountain was complete. The original county town was abandoned. It later became famous as a filming location for "Chronicles of the Ghostly Tribe" and is now a paid scenic area.
